I Was a Soldier of September 1939

An all-Australia competition for the best essay/press article on “I Was a Soldier of September 1939”. The event is targeted at young Australians of Polish origin. The aim is to promote knowledge of Poland’s 20th century history among the young generation.

The competition is organized by Australian schools with instruction in Polish and Polish Community schools, with contributions from Australian and Polish Community media.

From the Gdańsk Shipyard to The Berlin Wall. The Birth of a New World Order

An open seminar on the erosion of the Communism regime and democratic change in the region. Attendees will include Australia’s authorities on the subject: Prof. Stefan Auer (La Trobe University, Melbourne), Prof. Leslie T. Holmes (Melbourne University) and Prof. Martin Krygier (University of NSW). Discussions will focus on three main themes: a) Poland of the 1980s, b) the Round Table and the European Autumn of Nations, c) the new Europe and the new world order. The events of these three stages will be presented as a chain of cause and effect.  

The seminar will be held at the prestigious State Library of New South Wales under the slogan “Solidarity – Made in Poland”.

An international scientific symposium organized jointly with the McGill University, the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in Canada, the Goethe Institute and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Attendees will include Prof. Zbigniew Brzeziński, Prof. Karol Modzelewski, Prof. Piotr Sztompka and many other experts. The event will be accompanied by an exhibition on the life of Prof. Tadeusz Romer, a distinguished figure of resistance to Nazism and Communism and a former McGill lecturer..

The Festival of Freedom. Warsaw to Prague

Open air festivities to present twenty years of Polish democracy. The aim is to showcase Poland as a young, dynamic and democratic European state with lots to offer in cultural terms, and Warsaw as a symbol of freedom fight, a Phoenix city combining the past with the modernity. The event includes exhibitions, concerts and multimedia shows.

The Rock Against War

It All Began... in Gdańsk, at the Round Table, in Poland

An awareness campaign for the general public. Initiated in December 2008, it tracks Europe’s democratic changes back to 1989. Permanent features of the campaign are the use of the jubilee year logo and the organisation of outdoor events in key Berlin locations (e.g. central railway station, Berlin metro) using the slogan “It All Began in Gdańsk”, “It All Began at the Round Table” and the Gary Cooper motif of the “High Noon, 4 June” poster by Tomasz Sarnecki. The campaign will also include an artistic programme at the Radialsystem centre of culture and performance arts in Berlin.

1989: New Roads. The Beginning of a Life in Democracy and Freedom.

A Polish-German seminar organized by the German Embassy in Warsaw, the Polish Embassy in Berlin, Kreisau-Initiative Berlin and the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding to discuss the causes, processes and outcomes of the transformation period. The seminar participants will learn how the events of that period were depicted in art and media in Poland and Germany and will also have an opportunity to hear eyewitness accounts and expert opinions.

Solidarity. A Peaceful Revolution

A multimedia exhibition designed to present the fight against the Communist regime in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe in 1970–1989. It will be accompanied by short evocative films which will be shown using different media (television sets, screens, wall projections). Each film will tell a different story, focusing not only on important historical events but also on culture and everyday life of the period.

The End of Communism

An exhibition of photographs by Erazm Ciołek and Chris Niedentathal. Tomasz Sarnecki’s poster featuring Gary Cooper and the Solidarity logo (“High Noon, 4 June”) will be the leitmotif of the exhibition. Curator: Adam Mazur, CSW. Poster reprints will be published in connection with the exhibition.
The exhibition is organized as part of the 2009 History Forum (Geschichtsforum 2009). The venue of the event will be Humboldt-Campus on the Museum Island in the vicinity of the Polish Institute in Berlin.

It All Began at Noon Sharp

An event held at the famous Berlin performance centre Radialsystem as part of the image campaign under the slogan “It All Began in Gdańsk”. Partly a picnic and partly an open-air festival, it highlights the importance of the 1989 changes in Poland and the parliamentary election of 4 June for the new architecture of Europe. The event’s leitmotif will be Tadeusz Sarnecki’s Solidarity electoral poster (Solidarity at High Noon). Guest of honour – Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit.

Children of the Revolution: 1989–2009
 
The aim is to make the British public opinion aware of Poland’s role and importance in the transition of 1989 and encourage broad ranging discussion on the contemporary meaning of transformation, revolution and social changes in the context of the evolving social, economic, political and cultural institutions. The project includes: a) a discussion panel at the Tate Modern, b) an international conference at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, c) a collection of 1980s and 1990s political posters from Central and Eastern Europe at the Victoria & Albert Museum, with selected posters being displayed on the walls of famous buildings in London and 2–3 other UK cities; d) a lecture by President Lech Wałęsa at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Archiving the collection of Central and Eastern European political posters illustrating the changes of 1989, the first democratic elections in Poland and the transformation of Czechoslovakia.

A scientific conference at the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome to highlight Poland’s contribution to the fall of Communism and transformation towards freedom and democracy in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as to promote knowledge on the effects of democratic and political reforms in Central and Eastern Europe and the role of Poland and Polish intellectuals in creating a new political order in Europe. The conference will be accompanied by the exhibition “The Decade of Solidarity 1979–1989”.

An exhibition of previously unpublished photographs of German soldiers from October and November 1939, showing the destruction of Warsaw, the plight of the city’s inhabitants and the entry of the German army. Held at the Latvia Museum of War, the exhibition is intended for the general public, both Latvians and foreigners visiting the country in summer.

A big concert open to the public (free entry). Warsaw, Chicago’s sister city, will collaborate in designing the artistic programme, which will mostly feature modern interpretations of Chopin’s music (classical, symphony and rock renditions) and multimedia shows. The concert will be held at the prestigious Millennium Park, considered to be Midwest’s premier cutting-edge music venues. Invited artists will include the renowned piano pianists Janusz Olejniczak and Leszek Możdżer, the singers Anna Serafińska and Leszek Świdziński and the musicians taking part in the “Rock Loves Chopin” project designed by Stołeczna Estrada. In addition to the musical programme, special films will be produced to illustrate Poland’s progress from the birth of Solidarity through the events of June 1989 until its accession to the NATO and the EU. Lech Wałęsa will be the guest of honour. The concert will be hosted by the popular ABC anchor Alan Krashesky.

A promotional festival on the Navy Pier in Chicago organized as part of the Polish Constitution Day celebrations. Accompanied by the US premiere of Testimony (Świadectwo), a movie about Pope John Paul II, the event is designed to educate the American audience, including those of Polish origin, on Poland’s road to freedom and membership in Transatlantic and European organizations, with a particular focus on the fifth anniversary of the EU membership, the tenth anniversary of the NATO membership and the twentieth anniversary of the fall of Communism.
 
Co-organized by: Polish American Cultural and Educational Institute, Abramowicz Catholic Seminary, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
